A 4.5-mile circular walk from Hassop Station, now a popular cafe and the largest cycle hire centre on the Trail. It heads north through Great Longstone and up to Longstone Edge, returning across field paths and farm tracks.

Hassop Station’s car park is pay and display, but the owners often open a nearby field for free on busy days. The 218 bus between Sheffield and Bakewell stops beside the station – see also getting there.

The climb to the Edge is fairly gentle, with a steeper section near the top along a narrow path that can get overgrown with ferns in summer (point 11 on the pdf map). But it’s worth the effort for the views south across the White Peak.

Longstone Edge stretches for around four miles between Monsal Dale and Calver. The route back passes the hamlet of Rowland and the high stone walls surrounding Hassop Hall before returning to the Trail.

Opened in 1863, Hassop was one of several stations along the route of today’s Monsal Trail (click for a brief history of the line). The last passengers left in 1942, and the line itself closed in 1968 following Dr Beeching’s report.

Refreshments

The cafe at Hassop Station serves a wide range of meals, snacks and drinks, and the route passes close to Great Longstone’s two pubs, the White Lion and the Crispin.
